A sample request is when a media professional asks to try your product before featuring it in their publication. Fulfilling the right sample requests is one of the most effective ways to earn media coverage through Press Hook.

What Is a Sample Request?

When a journalist, editor, or blogger is interested in your product, they may submit a sample request through Press Hook. This means they want to receive a physical (or digital) sample of your product so they can review it, test it, or include it in an upcoming story or gift guide.

Should I Fulfill Every Sample Request?

Not every sample request will be the right fit for your brand. Before approving a request, consider these factors:

Check the publication's audience. Does the outlet's readership or viewership align with your target customer? A fitness brand may not benefit from a sample request from a home decor blog.

Look at the outlet's reach. Larger, well-known publications (Tier 1 media) typically offer the broadest exposure. However, niche outlets with a highly engaged audience can also deliver strong results.

Consider the timing. If the journalist is working on a holiday gift guide and your product is seasonal, that is a strong signal to fulfill the request.

How to Approve or Decline a Sample Request

  1. You will receive a notification when a media professional submits a sample request for your product.

  2. Review the request details, including the journalist's name, outlet, and what they are working on.

  3. Click "Approve" to accept the request, or "Decline" if it is not a fit.

  4. If approved, ship the product sample directly to the journalist using the shipping details provided.

Tips for Maximizing Sample Request Success

Include a personal note. A brief, professional note introducing your brand and explaining why the product is relevant to their story makes a positive impression.

Follow up politely. After sending a sample, it is appropriate to follow up once after 1-2 weeks to ask if they received it and if they need anything else.

Keep track of your requests. Use your Press Hook dashboard to monitor which samples you have sent and which have resulted in coverage.

Note: Even if a sample request does not result in immediate coverage, the journalist now knows your brand. Keeping them updated with new products and timely news gives them a reason to feature you in future stories.
